How do I write a research report? (Part 2)

Who is my audience and what will they expect?

It is important to consider your audience before you begin and while you write your research report so that your report will adequately communicate your research and its significance to readers. For instance, if you don’t consider your reader’s needs, you might use language that they don’t understand or you might explain the background of your work in too much or too little detail. It is best to think of the audience for your research reports as peers in your immediate discipline or in a discipline closely related to your subject. This is true even when you write a report for a class that will be graded by an instructor rather than read by other researchers.

If you are writing a research report for a teacher, the greatest challenge you face in writing your report is to write as though the professor is not your only reader. Imagine a broader audience of your peers and colleagues who will not be grading your work. If you visualize an audience of people with a similar background who are interested in your subject, but who do not know as much about it as you do, you will likely make writing your report easier than if you visualize your audience as a group of experts or someone uninterested in your subject. Keep in mind that your goal should be to write in such a way that someone skilled in the art could reproduce your work precisely. Read more…

How do I write a research report? (Part 1)

Engineers, scientists, and managers write research reports to communicate the results of research, field work, and other activities. Often, a research report is the only concrete evidence of your research, and the quality of the research may be judged directly by the quality of the writing and how well you convey the importance of the findings. Even if you don’t consider yourself a writer, then it is still important to consider clarity, organization, and content when you are presenting your research in a research report.

Fortunately, research reports, which are similar to research articles, technical reports, lab reports, formal reports, or scientific papers (to name a few), have a fairly consistent format that will help you to organize your information clearly. Most research reports contain the same major sections, although the names of the section vary widely, and sometimes it is appropriate to omit sections or add others. If you are submitting a research report for a class or to an organization, check for specific requirements and guidelines before beginning to write your research report.

PROSTHETICS students from 10 different nations travelled Friday to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center by Forestry Administration to see Chhouk, a 4-year-old baby elephant who lost part of a leg, be fitted with a new prosthesis.

During the trip, organised by the Cambodian School of Prosthetics and Orthotics (CSPO), Cathy McConnell, who headed the prosthesis project, said it was only the second case she knew of an elephant receiving a prosthetic limb.
